Green Week in the DT11 area July 4 to 10.
Are you considering getting solar panels to create electricity, or would you like to know more about wildlife on the Dorset downs? Or perhaps you are interested in where to find medicinal plants growing in the wild? Anyone interested in local and global green issues is encouraged to participate in Green Week, which takes place in Blandford and surrounding villages and parishes from 4 to 10 July.
Green Week has been put together by the DT11 Forum Community Partnership, along with a number of local groups and organisations, and activities will range from walks, talks and presentations to art activities and a green technology open day. Amongst the events taking place is a farm open day at Goldhill Organic Farm, a butterfly walk on Milldown in Blandford, a family art event using recyclable materials, which will take place at the Blandford Adult Learning Centre, and wild food walks along the River Stour.
One of the highlights of Green Week will be a Green Fair to be held at the Corn Exchange in Blandford, on Friday 9 July (the same day as the farmers’ market), from 9am-12pm. A number of green businesses will be attending with displays and demonstrations of renewable technologies such as photovoltaic panels for generating electricity, wood pellet boilers and ground source heat pumps. Other stallholders will include wildlife organisations like Butterfly Conservation, local businesses selling eco-products and local ‘green’ groups.
Carrie Lewis, of DT11’s Green Group, which has co-ordinated the event, says ‘The DT11 Forum is committed to moving towards a more sustainable future, and Green Week will bring together many individuals and local groups working to create a greener community.’
A leaflet detailing all the activities is available from Blandford library, the town council offices, the tourist information centre and other local outlets.
