Improvements to Stour Meadow

Stour MeadowsHave you notice how the access on Stour Meadow is sometimes muddy or over grown? DT11 Forum is offering everyone who uses and values Stour Meadow the opportunity to share their views on what improvements could be made on the Meadow.

A number of options have been put forward but the views of local people are essential before any decisions or work is undertaken.

The Meadow is a popular place with dog walkers and families, close to the centre of Blandford town. The problem is that it sometimes floods, making it very muddy and unpleasant to walk through after rain, but as a floodplain we have to keep in mind the environmental issues or impact that any changes may cause. This makes the options limited but the views of local people are important before making any decisions about the future of such an important open space.

Two consultation days took place on Wednesday 20th May and Thursday 21st May. If you did not attend the consultation days but would like to express your views please contact Emma-Jane Salter, 01258 489998 or the DT11 community office at 5 Nightingale Court, Blandford Forum.

New village website launched

Blandford St Mary Parish Council has long been aware of the need for a Village Web Site.  An increasing number of parishioners have the means to go on line, either directly or with the support of family or neighbours.  The increasing tendency to turn to ‘Shopping On Line’ can be of particular benefit to the elderly, disabled or those without easy access to transport.

The Parish Plan currently being drafted highlighted considerable support for a local site with an overwhelming number of respondents willing to use and contribute to a local forum.

www.blandfordstmary.wordpress.com has been developed by local resident Mrs Christine Iredale on a voluntary basis. The site is clear and easy to use even for those without extensive computer skills. In addition to Church and Council News there is a brief History of the Village, details of community facilities and businesses, local walks and places of interest. Much more could be included and proposals and suggestions for additional items are very welcome either by an entry in the ‘Contact Us’ page on the site or by writing to the Parish Clerk, Mrs Nicola Phillips at 9 Win Green Close, Shaftesbury SP7 8SR

Leisure centre provides value for money

BLCAG logoA survey, carried out by the Blandford Leisure Centre Action Group (BLCAG), has confirmed that people who use the Centre think it provides good value for money and is definitely worth saving.

Cllr Steve Hitchings, chairman of BLCAG, said: “This survey has confirmed what we always thought, that Blandford Leisure Centre offers real value for money and provides an invaluable service to the wider community.”

The survey also asked where people lived so that BLCAG can determine how far people travel to use the facilities. It revealed that more than half the users came from villages outside Blandford, proving that the centre is a hub for the wider community.

Staff came top of the list with 95% of respondents saying they thought the staff did a good job at the centre and 84% said they would be prepared to pay reasonably increased admission fees if it meant keeping the centre open.

Front of Hospital

The first National Health Service in the world was established in Britain in July 1948, a brave step in the austere aftermath of the Second World War.  The aim was, for the first time, to relieve the population from reliance on charitable organisations and to provide free medical services to all regardless or circumstance or rank.  One key provision was that these services should be provided at local level.
